Lyricist Michael Korie (Grey GardensFinding Neverland) and librettist Arthur Perlman discuss the career of the legendary E.Y. “Yip” Harburg. (April 8, 1896 – March 4, 1981), Harburg wrote the lyrics to the many standards including “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” and all the songs in The Wizard of Oz. Korie and Perlman discuss Harburg’s contribution to the theatrical canon, particularly his most beloved musical Finian’s Rainbow. Perlman has tweaked the libretto for the revival of this 1947 classic which opens this month on Broadway.

Also on the show, critics Michael Kuchwara, of the Associated Press, and Jacques Le Sourd, of CBS Radio, review the new play A Steady Rain, which stars Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman, as well as the revival of Kaufman and Ferber’s The Royal Family and Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts’ new play Superior Donuts.

    Dear Susan:
great show tonite! I loved hearing Michael Korie speak about lyric construction and the comparison with show music and today’s music..and yes, Yip Harburg was the Gershwin’s contemporary..I love the Finian’s Rainbow music, but have never seen a production.
My NY friends loved STEADY RAIN..but they love Hugh Jackson..
interesting to hear that review..I will be interested in hearing the commentary on Kristin Chenowitz’s Promises…and where is Burt Bachrach?
thanks for good production..I love this program!
    Best to you, Susan
